St. Marys Cathedral of the Assumption
This is a report about my visit at St. Marys Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, KY. In this report, I will explain the importance of situating a societys cultural and artistic expressions within a historical place setting and examine the influences of intellectual, religious, political, and socio-economic forces on social, cultural, and artistic expressions.
St. Marys Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption
I visited St. Marys Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption on Saturday December 3, 2011. To say it was beautiful would be an understatement. The church was the most beautiful church that I sport ever had the pleasure to visit. Everything from the paintings, to the organ, to the statues was very intriguing.
Construction began in 1894 as a dream of the Most Reverend Camillus Paul Maes. He was the third Bishop of the Diocese of Covington. Though it was his dream to build the Cathedral, the forge was never completed. Even today, the Diocese of Covington is still trying to encounter the reverends dreams.
When you enter the Cathedral, the first thing that you admit is the architecture and the gargoyles.
The church was built with the Gothic era in mind. The pillars and the foundation look identical to the Middle Ages. The floor course of study of a Gothic cathedral was essentially a conglomeration of squares and rectangles, at the corner of which ascended piers that stretched skyward to support the canopy of arches. The bossy innovation of the ribbed, or groin, vault enabled the cathedral builders to canopy capacious expanses. The intersection of two pointed arches, held in place by a key scar, formed the ribbed vault. These vault arches, which were its groins, or ribs, distributed and channeled the weight of the stone vault down the piers to the ground below.
