The text We are Bound for the Promised Land by A.E. Watterson is about the girl Eilean MacLeod. She lives on a humble Scottish island. The story begins in a stable where she is nourishment the animals. When she has finished she goes back to the house, where her mother is knitting and her sisters are cooking. Her start out, who is a priest, appears from the bedroom and tells Eilean to help the mother, but Eilean has other plans. She has an appointment with her friends black Angus and Lewis. Her father says that she has to stay and help, but Eilean contradicts him. The father set downs angry and slaps her in the face.
Later Eilean meets Angus and Lewis in school. They ask why she didnt show up. Eilean says it was because of her father, but the boys dont believe her.
beside Sunday, Eilean and her family are going to church to hear the father preach. after the Sunday meal Eilean complimentss to go out. Her mother asks her to bring a spool of thread back to an old woman called MacIver.
The family MacLeod lives a very humble life. They only have one alarm and a few chickens. The mother is repairing the clothes with borrowed thread, and she knits the familys stockings.



The family is non in possession of modern facilities such as a stove: they worked on a griddle that balanced supra the steady flames on an iron stand… (p.1, l.28). The distribution of roles in the family is very traditional. The mother takes care of the housework, and the daughters help. The father is the authority. He knows whats good for Eilean and her sisters, namely staying at home helping the mother. The father isnt satisfied by the fact that Eilean doesnt want to accept this family pattern.
She is playing with her friends Lewis and Angus though she knows her father doesnt like it. She is bored because nothing happens on the small isolate island.
