Alcoff Exegesis

Alcoff Exegesis In this paper, I will be doing an exegesis on a passage from page fourteen of Linda Alcoffs essay, Visible Identities. In this chapter of Alcoffs essay she writes on her ultimate focus, which is the concept that amicable identity operator is an a priori problem and the view that social identity is a menace to progress. More specifically, the passage itself will act as a precursor to Alcoffs next section of her paper on identity politics. Alcoff wants to make a distinction between the a priori framework, in which identity is always already problematic, from more specific critiques that sequester a particular problem with the way identity is world studied in a given theory. An a piori perceptiveness is one which is passed without any empirical evidence or suffer for support. Alcoff describes social identity as an a priori problem because social identity, that is, things pertaining to ethnicity, gender, and race amongst opposite groups, is often assumed without empirical evidence. These other more specific critiques that Alcoff is trying to separate include the formulation of identity through over homogenization, essentialism, reduction, and simplification.
